So, you’re now set on the idea of a building a mezzanine for your office, warehouse or shop, and now you’ve got to get planning. One of the first things you’ll be thinking about is, “Which material should the floor decking use?” And there’s a number of factors you’ve got to consider when choosing the right flooring material for your business.

No matter which material you choose, each of the floors we make and install are entirely bespoke in design, thanks to our CAD (Computer Aided Design) technology. Since we see ourselves as experts in the field of mezzanines, we thought we’d share our knowledge with you, so that you can go into your search with a bit more confidence.

Weight Requirement/Durability

Obviously, an office mezzanine floor will have different requirements to an industrial mezzanine floor, so the material requirement will be very different. The weight that will be put on the floor is a hugely important factor – industrial floors will often have heavy machinery on them and retail floors will have a lots of people walking about on them.

Hot-rolled durbar floor plate, not necessarily the prettiest material (though we think it has a certain charm about it) is, nevertheless, a great choice for industrial environments, due to its high damage-resistance and strength. Mezzanine specialists, like Mezz, will make sure that whatever your floor needs to accommodate, it’ll be able to manage it comfortably.

For office, retail or commercial uses, high-density particle chipboard is strong enough to do whatever you need it to do, but definitely let the mezzanine specialist know if you’re going to be storing heavy objects on it.

Mezz Floors uses a classification system for different load specifications:

  • 480kg per m² for light use
  • 750kg per m² for medium use
  • 960kg per m² for heavy use

The Look

This is less important if you’re after a warehouse or factory mezzanine, but absolutely crucial if your mezzanine is going to be in a retail or commercial environment. Even in an office, you’ll want it to fit with the rest of the building or floor’s aesthetic theme.

High density particle chipboard is a common material to use in retail, commercial or office applications, because it combines durability with an easy adaptability to different looks and finishes. Laminate flooring can easily be laid down over the top of chipboard, so whatever look you want for your mezzanine, you can achieve it.

Special Requirements

The material can also depend on certain other requirements you’ve got, be it space for electrical wiring or cubicle partitions.

Mezzanine specialists can use CAD to cut grooves and holes into the floor to allow wires to go through and keep them out of the way. The same goes for the grooves needed to accommodate cubicle partitions.

High-density particle chipboard can easily accommodate electrical wiring, which makes it especially suitable for office applications. You don’t want wires trailing across the floor. It makes the floor look messy and massively increases the risk of tripping, which is a health and safety risk for your employees and clients, as well as being a potential legal problem for you.

Outdoor or Indoor?

Mezzanines aren’t only an indoor feature, and if yours is going to be outdoors then you’ll need to make sure that the material can survive the weather. High-density particle chipboard can be finished with an acrylic coating to massively enhance its water resistance. And, whilst metal floors are strong and tough, they too can suffer from prolonged contact with water, so you should definitely get them a proper outdoor-resistant finish. Galvanizing will cover the iron or steel with a protective zinc coating, to prevent it from rusting over time.
